The heart of Cimmeria was dominated by the vast and majestic highlands, a region of towering mountains and deep valleys. It was this area, not merely the frozen north as conjured forth by the popular imaginations of the multitude, which was the true cultural and geographic core of Cimmeria.
The highlands were characterized by rugged, rocky peaks that reached towards the sky, often shrouded in mist and clouds. Nestled between the mountains were fertile valleys where small communities of Cimmerians had carved out a living. These valleys were more temperate, allowing for limited agriculture and grazing. Glacial meltwater flowed down from the peaks, forming rivers and streams that nourished the valleys below.
The water was crystal clear and icy cold, providing a vital resource for the inhabitants of the highlands.
